Eating with Braces

During orthodontic treatment, you will be asked to avoid certain types of food that may damage your braces or appliances. In general, hard, sticky, crunchy, sugary and chewy foods should not be eaten while you have braces because they have a tendency to break or damage them, which can lead to unscheduled appointments and a longer treatment time.   If you choose your food and snacks carefully, you will be able to maintain your braces and get a better end result in a shorter amount of time!

Foods to Avoid:

  • Hard foods such as candy and nuts.

  • Sticky foods such as caramel and gum.

  • Chewy foods like hard rolls, bagels, and licorice.

  • Crunchy foods such as chips, popcorn and ice.

  • Large foods that you must bite into such as whole apples and carrots.

  • If you have Invisalign or clear retainers, remember they MUST be removed to eat or drink ANYTHING except water  to avoid tooth decay.

Foods to Enjoy:

  • Soft breads, tortillas, pancakes, and muffins.

  • Dairy products such as milk, pudding, and cheese.

  • Soft grains including pasta and rice.

  • Meat such as ground beef and shredded chicken.

  • Fish and seafood.

  • Vegetables that are soft such as mashed potatoes, beans, and spinach.

  • Soft fruits such as applesauce and bananas.

  • Sweets including ice cream, milkshakes, gelatin, and cake.

Make sure you brush your teeth and braces every time after you eat.  If this is not possible, rinse your mouth with water to remove the acids and food particles until you have a chance to brush them thoroughly.  We want to make sure your orthodontic treatment is comfortable and efficient.  Please be careful with your diet so we can give you a beautiful and healthy smile!
